One of the most famous WWI poets, Wilfred Owen wrote Dulce et Decorum est as a message to the public - don't tell your children 'that old Lie', that it is sweet and right to die for your country, when you have no idea about the real horrors of war.

In the first verse the poet is describing the soldiers who are marching to rest.
To describe this Owen has used the words "men marched asleep". "Trudge" , "tired" and "drunk with fatigue". Owen has also used some quotes such as "men marched asleep" and "many had lost there boots". Owen has written because he wants to tell the reader how tired the soldiers are.
Owen also emphasises this idea by using a metaphor "drunk with fatigue" what Owen is trying say is that the soldiers are so tired that they look like that they are tired with fatigue.
